How can I help my
child?

Encourage
your child to read daily. Research
consistently shows that those children who read often obtain higher
test scores in reading comprehension. The old adage "practice
makes perfect" is really true. You may want to have a silent reading
time wherein your entire family reads together. It is important
that adults model reading behavior for children; this helps them
gain a purpose for reading.
Why
should I encourage my child to read AR books?
AR books are chosen by experts in reading education
who have identified certain titles as representative of high quality
children's literature. Also, the incentive program helps your
child build confidence in his abilities as a reader and assists
in developing self esteem through the use of positive reinforcement
system.
Also, if your child is in the fourth grade,
part of his language arts grade is dependent upon meeting a point
goal during the nine week period.
Should
I interrupt my child when he reads a word incorrectly?
It depends. If the mistake does not affect the
meaning of the sentence, do not interrupt. The more you interrupt,
the more choppy the story becomes, and this disrupts the flow
of the story.
If your child reads a word incorrectly and this
DOES affect the meaning of the sentence, you may want to interrupt.
Encourage your child to stop reading for clarification when he
reads something that does not make sense.
Reading
Strategies for our Younger Students:
Below are some strategies you can use when reading
orally with your child:
1. Look at the picture.
2. Say the first part of the word.
3. Look at the beginning and ending sounds.
4. What word would make sense here?
5. Try to find "chunks" or parts of the word that you know.
